Retired President Daniel arap Moi has told Members of Parliament in the country not to be biased towards their friends and relatives during the dispensing of Constituency Development Funds. Moi said the CDF was a kitty which could be used to develop areas equally and urged Officials “not to be used to benefit friends and relatives.”
The former President lamented that the pace of putting up new educational infrastructure in the country was very low saying the same would negatively affect educational standards.
“Education in the country is in its death-bed because political leaders have dedicated their time and energy to other issues,” Moi observed. The former President urged the Multi-national tea companies to chip in and assist schools around them by putting up structures and giving financial assistance to bright children from poor families. He was speaking at Moi Tea Girls Secondary school during a prize giving ceremony to the best performers of 2009 from the school.
Moi told the students not to let down the school which was associated with his name adding, “Do not let my name down by posting poor performance.” He urged the children to concentrate on their studies and avoid temptations by those cheating them over marriages and added, “…time for marriage is not now. Read first.” He caused laughter when he told a story of boys lying to girls saying, “A boy told a girl that he loved her so much that he could jump over a fire,” then continued to say, “Let’s meet on Sunday if it does not rain.” In retrospect revealing the boy’s greater fear of rain than fire.
Moi told head teachers from the district not to compete with the local schools but set standards that could enable the students to compete with national schools. Moi Tea secondary school took first position in Kericho district. Seven students scored plain A’s while twenty two had ‘A’ minus.
Those who scored “A” included Waithera D. Kimani, 84 points, Lydia Moraa, 83 points, Chebet Centrine, 83 points, Cherono Lois, 82 points, Chepngetich Joyce 82 points, Cherotich Irine and Edith Tonui, both 81 points.
In conclusion the retired President asked the people to vote no against the proposed draft constitution saying it was biased especially
towards the people of the vast Rift Valley province. “These people think there are some hidden things in the R.Valley province and want to find out. The province is very complicated.”
