Open Door Policy Allows Parents To Visit School Any Time

( 0 Votes )

School Director Mrs. Jean Muhoho (Seated right) and guests at the school’s prize giving dayWhen one mention the word ‘school’, a picture of teachers and pupils in a teaching and learning situation instantly forms in one’s mind. This is the image, perceived of Compuera Academy when I first heard of it; but, was wrong. My visit to the school in November made look at schools from a different perceptive. I’m almost certain that whoever visits Compuera leave the school with new idea of what a school should be. ‘In Compuera, responsibilities of teachers and parents are clear each playing their specific roles. In the performance of their tasks in school the presence of both the groups in school is unrestricted’, affirms the school director, Jean Muhoho.

In this school’s set up, the parents are key stakeholders and take the upper hand when it comes to parenting. Moreover, we believe that relating well with parents create goodwill and understanding which is good for children.

‘Parents are allowed to come to school any time and enquire about their children, in so far it won’t mean not pulling the teacher out of the class or interrupting the his class in anyway,’ adds the principal, George Mureithi.

The Problem Child is not to Blame

I want to talk about the paradox of successful parenting, teaching and counseling. The use of the word ‘paradox’ satisfactorily describes the complexity involved in dealing with children. Look at this example: the child is father to the man, or the student is a teacher. The paradox can be interpreted to means parents who are overly anxious to be perfect may end up failing terribly to achieve the desired results; and overly anxious teacher may fail to produce academically and emotionally balanced student, and so is the well intentioned counselor who fails to appreciate the intertwined conflict within his client.

Let me be specific. A parent who has an excellent student and became an engineer may have a burning desire to have his son to be equally such a serious student. Unfortunately, the son got carried away by peer pressure and become a self-styled dancer in a local joint or in a school. He begins to get into trouble academically such that while he got over 400 marks in KCSE, now he is only managing a D in a competitive school. The disappointed father compares the boy with the young sister or brother in lower classes and gives the failing boy a piece of his mind. The boy’s mother joins in and becomes a ‘counselor’ in the house trying the commonsense counseling heard in church or with other frustrated mothers. ‘You know how much I love you! Why are you not performing? You know I would do anything for you to do well in school.”

When parents are deciding to stay in a public school or move to a private school is what is considered by the public as excellence. What constitute an EXCELLENT school in the eyes of the public is that sense of purpose that drives every facet of practice and decision-making. But what are the critical priorities that fuel that sense of purpose? Academic reputation and higher education preparation, School size and Class size, Safety reputation, Special programs, Costs, religious and moral instruction, location and ideology.

Academic

Parents have a way of knowing that at high-performing schools, curriculum, instruction, and assessment are aligned with high standards. From their own they get to know that in a performing school all students are expected to meet or exceed set standards. These schools provide a coherent vision of what students should know and be able to do. They use instructional strategies that include a variety of challenging and engaging activities that are clearly related to the concepts and skills being taught.
