This institution continues to offer quality training to cope with global technological challenges and dynamic socio-economic needs of our country. Courses emphasize on creativity, Practical utility of the knowledge and skills acquired in colleges and providing services for the benefit of our country.
The establishment of The East African Community has brought about challenges which the institutions have taken up. The future graduates of these institutes are set to seek opportunities in the greater East African Community region because the training they are undergoing while at this institutions meet global benchmarks.
Excellence in technological training is important for the development of any country because the human capital produced, directly feeds into all sectors of its economy. This is what TIVET believes in hence strives to employ competent staff entrusted to produce professionals in technological know-how. By so doing, it’s evident that the EAC might soon catch up with developed nations as far as technological development is concerned.
North Eastern Province Technical Training Institute (NEP)
North Eastern Province Technical Training Institute’s (NEP) objective is to equip trainees with occupational skills that would make them both self-reliant and able to compete in the saturated job market. It has introduced the TIVET curriculum of education which aims at efficiency and flexibility where students can enrol for studies and exit at their own convenience. The courses are specifically tailored for employers who wish to sponsor their employees to horn their technical skills.
As stated in her vision, the institute strives to be a centre of excellence in technical, entrepreneurial training and research in Kenya and beyond. The mission of NEP is to train and equip trainees with technical, entrepreneurial and research skills. NEP has managed to come up with unique disciplines to quench the thirst of students pursuing higher education.
Maasai Technical Training Institute
Situated at Kajiado town, 76kms from Nairobi and 50kms from Mombasa road junction is Maasai Technical Training Institute. The institute’s courses are designed in line with the Government’s vision of 2030 strategy of developing competent manpower for growth and development. According to Vision 2030, a strong educational and training foundation is a basic requirement in ensuring the country attains its democratic goals.
Maasai Technical Training Institute offers a variety of courses in mechanical engineering, business studies and, information technology geared towards supporting this country to achieve its vision.
There is also a driving school which is offering class BCE, E, and F G courses. By the incorporation of supervised field practicum in the curriculum implementation, valuable feedback has been obtained and has been used in redefining and polishing the academic delivery so as to conform to modern trends in the profession.
Maasai Technical Training Institute created a wing robot, Maabot, in 2011 at the Bomas of Kenya. Robot can pick things up and build a small tower of blocks. Maobot can identify three different colours in darkness. The judges were looking for a robot that could intelligently identify three different colours of blocks, pick them up, carry them to a designated area and arrange them according to their colour. Maobot carried out the task with precision, while navigating the set path in the shortest time, was declared the winner.
The 2011 fourth annual robot contest for technical institutions and universities attracted 35 entrants was attended the Permanent Secretary Prof Crispus Kiamba. The PS said the technological know-how resulting from robot construction for the contest can be incubated and commercialised to produce automatons that can perform jobs cheaply and with greater accuracy and reliability than human beings.
According to one of the judges, they were uncertain as to whether the students would come up with robots that could perform the assigned tasks.
Maabot, designed by Masai Technical Training Institute students, emerged as the best of 12 robots that made it to the finals. During the finals, all the lights at the Bomas of Kenya auditorium were switched off to avoid interfering with the robots’ sensors. The sensors produce their own light, which they use to manipulate their environment.
Wote Technical Training Institute
Located 3kms from Wote Township in Makueni district along the Wote- Makindu road is Wote Technical Training Institute which was started in 1990 as a skills training centre. As a starter it was offering short term courses to youth polytechnic instructors and jua kali artisans. It is situated between Makueni girls and the Ministry Of Public Works Office on the slopes of a scenic hill over-looking Wote town. Wote Technical Training Institute varies the approach used in academic delivery which includes the theories, practical, and unlimited lectures to achieve the course content. With the rising demand for market driven courses, Wote Technical Training Institute has come up with unique disciplines to quench the thirst of students pursuing technical training.
Machakos Technical Training Institute
Machakos technical training institute opened its doors for students’ way back in January 1957. its one of the oldest and well established tertiary institutions under the ministry of education science and technology. It offers a wide range of courses in engineering, business studies, institutional management, information technology accountability and tailor made courses.
The courses offered are at diploma and certificate level. Machakos technical training institute has achieved its vision of being a model institution in technical, industrial, vocational and entrepreneurship training. The institution also offers quality and affordable training. It also boasts of an atmosphere conducive to serious study and research. Machakos technical has well equipped workshops, computer labs, a well stocked library, and several hostels for students who choose to board. The institute has well experienced staff and qualified to not only teach but also encourage students to do research. Students are also offered attachments through the industrial liaison officer and they do not pay any amount. Machakos institute offers a variety of courses which include co-operative management.
